THE TRUTH
“What is truth?” Pilate asked.
Sometimes the truth can be elusive. Evidence can be misleading or only partially reliable. There are inherent biases that sways each of our opinions and perceptions. The claim of a single, objective truth is debated by many. Everyone seemingly has their own version of the truth. And if everyone’s truth is basically varying shades of grey, then how important could the truth actually be?
Jesus stood before Pilate accused of an attempted revolt. He was titled ‘The King of The Jews’ by His enemies. Jesus’ response to the accusations was to redefine reality. Jesus claimed that He was King, but that His Kingdom was not of this world. Jesus told Pilate that The Truth lay behind and beyond the mirage of our reality. Pilate then asked, “what is truth?”
Truth is objective reality, that, once known, cannot be unknown. Truth is the light of revelation that illuminates existence. Truth is the path towards deeper understanding that must be journeyed one step at a time. Truth is the key that opens the doors of possibility that expands our horizons and grows our potential. Truth stood right in front of Pilate, daring him to see, to truly see.
Pilate’s decision on what he would do with this Truth, was that he wanted to make no decision. He washed his hands of the matter. And yet, this was an act of rejection of the Truth. You cannot walk away from it, dismiss it, or hide from it. Truth confronts you and forces you to decide. Will my perception of reality be altered forever, or will I go on deciding to keep the Truth up for debate?
Truth ceased to be elusive when He hung in stark nakedness on the cross. His life and death were a witness to the new reality that He spoke of. And on the third day, His resurrection became a tangible seal of the new reality yet to come. The mirage waning at the sound of His voice. Do you know The Truth?
